ANA BY HEP2.
Tests Overview
Listing Titel
ANA by HEp-2 (Antinuclear Antibody Test)
🔬 What Does “HEp-2” Mean?
HEp-2 cells are special human cells grown in the lab.
Your blood sample is added to these cells.
If ANA are present, they bind to the nucleus.
A fluorescent dye makes the pattern visible under a microscope.
This method is called Indirect Immunofluorescence (IIF).
🧪 Why Doctors Order ANA
To evaluate symptoms like:
Joint pain
Persistent fatigue
Skin rashes
Unexplained inflammation
It helps screen for autoimmune conditions such as:
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Sjögren’s syndrome
Scleroderma
Mixed connective tissue disease
📊 Understanding the Results
1️⃣ Titer (Strength of Antibody)
Reported as ratios like:
1:40 (low)
1:80
1:160
1:320 or higher
👉 Higher titer = stronger antibody presence
2️⃣ Pattern (Important!)
Common patterns include:
| Pattern | Possible Association |
|---|---|
| Homogeneous | Lupus |
| Speckled | Lupus, Sjögren’s |
| Nucleolar | Scleroderma |
| Centromere | Limited scleroderma |
📝 Key Points
ANA is a screening test, not a final diagnosis.
Low titers can be seen in healthy people.
Results must be interpreted with symptoms and other specific antibody tests (e.g., anti-dsDNA, ENA panel).
If you’d like, tell me your ANA titer and pattern, and I can help explain what it may suggest.
