What is Serum Amylase?

Serum Amylase হলো একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ enzyme, যা মূলত pancreas (অগ্ন্যাশয়) এবং salivary glands থেকে তৈরি হয়। এই enzyme খাবারের মধ্যে থাকা carbohydrate বা starch ভাঙতে সাহায্য করে, যাতে শরীর সহজে শক্তি পেতে পারে।

Serum Amylase test গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কারণ এটি সাহায্য করে:

• Pancreatic inflammation বুঝতে

• Salivary gland disorders শনাক্ত করতে

Therefore, high value মানেই সবসময় pancreatitis নয়, তবে এটি strong warning sign।

Low Serum Amylase – Is It Serious?

Low Serum Amylase সাধারণত খুব বেশি clinically significant নয়, তবে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে দেখা যেতে পারে:

• Chronic pancreatic damage

• Cystic fibrosis

• Severe liver disease

• 2–3 দিনের মধ্যে আবার কমতে পারে

তাই timing খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Serum Amylase vs Serum Lipase

Although both tests pancreas-related:

• Serum Amylase: Rises early, less specific

• Serum Lipase: More specific for pancreatitis, stays high longer

That’s why doctors often prescribe both tests together।
