ASCITIC PLEURAL FLUID FOR AFB CULTURE

Ascitic or Pleural Fluid for AFB Culture is an important laboratory test used to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB bacteria) in body fluids. This test helps diagnose Tubercular Ascites (abdominal TB) and Tubercular Pleural Effusion (TB infection in the lungs’ lining).

🔬 What is AFB Culture?

AFB stands for Acid Fast Bacilli, which mainly refers to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

• Culture test means the fluid sample is kept in special media

• If TB bacteria are present, they grow in the lab

Unlike AFB smear, AFB culture is more sensitive and accurate, although it takes longer time.

Collected through Paracentesis (abdomen থেকে sterile needle দিয়ে fluid নেওয়া হয়)

🔹 Pleural Fluid

Collected through Thoracentesis (chest থেকে fluid সংগ্রহ করা হয়)

Procedure trained doctor দ্বারা sterile condition-এ করা হয়।

• AFB culture usually takes 2 to 6 weeks

• Modern liquid culture systems may give faster results (1–3 weeks)

• Positive growth confirms TB

Because TB bacteria grow slowly, patience is required for final report.
