The most important organism detected by this test is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis. Although TB most commonly affects the lungs, it can also involve the larynx and throat, especially in patients with chronic cough, hoarseness of voice, persistent throat ulcer, unexplained weight loss, evening fever, or a history of pulmonary TB.
Under the microscope, Acid-Fast Bacilli appear as bright red or pink slender rods against a blue background.
এই পরীক্ষা দ্রুত প্রাথমিক ধারণা দিতে সাহায্য করে যে রোগীর শরীরে TB জীবাণু উপস্থিত আছে কিনা। তবে মনে রাখতে হবে, AFB smear test এর sensitivity তুলনামূলকভাবে কম। Negative result হলেও সম্পূর্ণভাবে TB বাতিল করা যায় না। প্রয়োজনে culture, CBNAAT (GeneXpert), বা PCR পরীক্ষা করার পরামর্শ দেওয়া হতে পারে।
