URINE FOR BACTEC CULTURE

Urine for BACTEC Culture is a specialized microbiological test used to detect Mycobacterial infections in urine samples, particularly genitourinary tuberculosis (GU-TB). This test utilizes the automated BACTEC culture system to identify slow-growing mycobacteria with higher sensitivity and faster detection compared to conventional culture methods.

The most common organism detected through this test is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis. While TB primarily affects the lungs, it can also involve the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and other parts of the urinary tract.

Doctors may recommend this test in patients with:

• Persistent urinary tract symptoms without bacterial growth in routine culture

• Sterile pyuria (pus cells in urine but no growth in standard culture)

• Blood in urine (hematuria)

• Recurrent urinary infections not responding to antibiotics

• Suspected genitourinary TB

BACTEC culture is more sensitive than routine smear tests.
